Athens Township and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi still are
negotiating how the tribe will pay for fire and medical protection at its Pine
Creek Reservation.
Because the tribe is exempt from taxation, the township had
asked it to pay what it would have paid in fire taxes were it not exempt. In
return, the tribe would receive emergency fire and medical services from the
township.
Township Supervisor Stephen Irons told the board Tuesday the
tribe wanted its $1.1 million medical center on the Fulton reservation to be
considered exempt from the township-assessed charges.
