The Osage Nation announced Monday that it will seek a rehearing by an appeals court of its claim that its reservation still exists and has the same boundaries as Osage County. That contention was rejected by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday in the Osage Nation's lawsuit against the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Osage County, Okla., is not an Indian reservation and hasn't been for more than 100 years, the 10th Circuit ruled, dismissing the Osage Nation's bid to stop the state from collecting income tax from tribal members who live there.

Former Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, her husband said Tuesday. Charlie Soap offered no other details. He asked that the public respect the family's privacy.

Leaders of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe declined to respond Monday to an accounting firm's report that claims committee members received overpayments of $35,000 each. The general council met on Saturday and discussed the overpayments along with two other issues, said Logan Line, public relations director for the tribe.

A recent audit of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribal Business Committee showed members were overpaid $59,000. The eight-page report dated Jan. 11 and prepared by Mense, Churchwell & Mense, P.C., of Joplin, Mo., showed members were entitled to an annual stipend of $24,000.
