Remember Bammy Mammy/Wammy Mammy?

I remember this:

Remember the storm warriors that went up in the sky to get information from the Great Spirit, on what to do.  The storm warriors were transformed when they came back down.

Remember Wammy-mammy and Crazy Horse:  She was the one that most always said BAM!  right before she hit someone.  I still do it once in a while.  haha  Old habits are hard to break.

Historic Step Toward Abenaki State Recognition

Posted by: vcnaa in Untagged  on

The VT Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs, today voted out unanimously S.222, (an act relating to recognition of Abenaki bands and tribes).

The AG's efforts to use “unintended consequences” simply comes from the same old playbook. The committee although, took the first step in righting a wrong.

Fifteen other states have recognized their resident native people as American Indian Tribes, without any of those tribes previously or subsequently acquiring federal recognition.

In May of 2006, the General Assembly passed S117, in an effort to recognize the Abenaki people fell short. The act failed to comport with the recognition requirements of the IACB.

Spring is Here!

In <http://www.dotphoto.com/CPViewAlbum.asp?AID=6111001> you can see a bit of what I saw on Saturday.

Throughout time and all over the Earth, Spring has been recognized as a time of renewal. People of faith would say that the entire universe declares the Glory of God, and how can you look and fail to see? Atheists just say "Wow" when presented with the awe-inspiring beauty which cannot be duplicated by humanity.

May this land be renewed as we care for it rather than exploit it,

State recognition does not lead to federal recognition

State recognition does not lead to federal recognition
March 8, 2010
Mark Mitchell

The VT Senate Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs has scheduled a review and vote on S.222 , (An act relating to recognition of Abenaki tribes) on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

Conflict between the Attorney General's office over the current draft as proposed, continue to plaque State tribal recognition and any movement on S.222. The AG's office led the State’s long opposed federal recognition for Vermont's Abenaki and continues to denied their existence. The AG's office has taken a NO comment position to requests from this web site on their official position.

“Unintended consequences”: This was a critical objection made on behalf of the Vermont Attorney General’s office in testimony to the Senate Economic Development Committee on February 26. In its opinion, the present wording of pending legislation on Native American affairs may open the State up to unforeseen and much unwanted ramifications.

The NH House floor debate on HB1610 has now been scheduled for March 10, 2010.

While a new expanded gambling proposal may be gaining some traction at the State House, the anti-gaming movement in New Hampshire are targeting HB1610 fearing it could lead to Indian Gaming in New Hampshire.

"HB1610 has nothing to do with Indian gaming. It will do nothing to grant special privileges of any sort to any Indian resident in New Hampshire," stated Sherry Gould, from the Coalition in Support of HB 1610.

Supporters will gather on the steps of the State House at 9:00.

Vermont Attorney General runs Interference

"Conflict between draft as proposed and the Attorney General's office," stated Senator Vince Illuzzi, as being the reason for delaying a Senate committee's vote on S.222, An act relating to recognition of Abenaki tribes.

Since the passing of S117, the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs has lacked the established authority to "permit the creation, display, and sale of Native American arts and crafts and legally to label them as Indian- or Native American-produced as provided in 18 U.S.C. § 1159(c)(3)(B) and 25 U.S.C. § 305e(d)(3)(B)."
